Myanmar has agreed to take back 180,000 Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh, marking a significant step toward resolving the Rohingya crisis, according to Dr. Khalilur Rahman, the Chief Adviser’s High Representative. This announcement came after a meeting with Myanmar officials in Bangkok on Friday.
This confirmed list represents the first phase of repatriation efforts, and Myanmar’s Foreign Minister U Than Shew also revealed that the documents for another 70,000 refugees are currently being reviewed for their return.
The original list of approximately 800,000 Rohingya refugees was submitted by Bangladesh in several batches from 2018 to 2020. During the meeting, Myanmar authorities confirmed that the verification process for the remaining 550,000 refugees would proceed quickly.
Dr. Rahman also extended condolences to Myanmar for the recent earthquake victims and offered additional humanitarian aid from Bangladesh to assist those affected by the disaster.
