Govt must not be held hostage, Hasnat warns civil servants

National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Organiser (southern region) Hasnat Abdullah on Monday warned government officials against attempting to hold the administration “hostage” in protest of the Government Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025.

Speaking at a street rally at Biplob Uddyan in the port city, Hasnat said, “If you have concerns about the reform process, resolve them through internal discussions. But if you try to paralyse the government, the consequences will not be favourable.”

Civil servants across the country observed protests for the third consecutive day on Monday and announced plans to continue demonstrations on Tuesday.

Recalling past events, Hasnat remarked, “During the July uprising, many of you wore black badges in support of Sheikh Hasina. Now, the same officials are threatening to disrupt the government’s functioning.”

He questioned their shifting stance, saying, “No one dared to resign before 5 August challenging Sheikh Hasina’s authority. Why are those same officials now refusing to cooperate with the new administration?”

Criticising the bureaucracy’s role under the previous regime, he said, “Had the fascist Awami League remained in power, many of you would have continued to serve loyally. But now, when a new government initiates reforms, you threaten resistance. The people will not hesitate to find your alternatives.”

Hasnat also questioned the moral consistency of civil servants, stating, “Before 5 August, did a single secretary, bureaucrat, or official resign in protest against the brutal shootings on citizens? Yet now, they are quick to resist a government that has just begun its work.”

He described the secretariat as “the cantonment of people’s suffering” and the National Board of Revenue (NBR) as “the labour room of corruption”.

As part of its ongoing organisational campaign, the NCP held street rallies in several areas of North Chattogram on Monday.

NCP Senior Joint Member Secretary Tasnim Zara, Joint Member Secretary Mir Arshadul Haque, joint chief organisers Mahmuda Alam Mitu and Md Ataullah, and Organiser Arman Hossain also addressed the gatherings.
