Bagha Sharif from Cumilla emerged victorious once again at the 116th edition of the historic Jabbarer Boli Khela, defeating opponent Rashed Boli in a gripping final match. Sharif had also bested Rashed in the previous year’s tournament, securing back-to-back titles.
The traditional wrestling competition took place on Friday (April 25) at 4 PM on a temporary stage set up at Laldighi Maidan in the heart of Chattogram city. A total of 120 wrestlers from different parts of the country participated in this year’s event.
Before the event even began, the Laldighi grounds were filled to capacity with spectators of all ages, reflecting the enduring popularity of this century-old local sport.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Hasib Aziz delivered a brief speech during the opening ceremony, while the event’s chief guest was Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain.
Jabbarer Boli Khela was first introduced in 1909 by local businessman Abdul Jabbar Saudagar. Since then, it has been held every year on the 12th day of the Bengali month of Boishakh, making it one of the region’s most cherished cultural traditions.
Coinciding with the wrestling tournament, the largest folk fair in the region also began on Thursday along the banks of Laldighi, drawing crowds with its colorful display of local crafts, food, and entertainment.
