Anti-discrimination student movement to hold protest rally in Gazipur

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement is set to hold a protest rally at Rajbari Field in Gazipur Sadar upazila this afternoon. The rally, scheduled for 1:30 pm, is expected to be attended by central leaders of the movement.

The event was announced early this morning around 4:00 am via a post on the movement’s Facebook page. The post declared that the rally would be a response to an attack by supporters of the Awami League, specifically members of the Mozammel-Jahangir faction, on organizers of the student movement in Gazipur.

According to the post, “A large protest rally will take place today (Saturday) in opposition to the assault on the organizers of the anti-discrimination movement.”

The rally is expected to draw students and supporters from across the country, in addition to the central leaders of the platform.

The attack occurred last night around 9:00 pm when a group of individuals targeted the residence of former Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque in Gazipur. Local residents physically assaulted those involved, leaving at least 15 injured, with three in critical condition, according to medical sources.

Reports from locals and police indicate that a group of protesters and residents stormed the minister’s home in Southkhana, Dhirashram, and damaged property. An announcement over a mosque loudspeaker falsely claimed that robbers had invaded the house, urging locals to respond. As a result, a crowd gathered and assaulted several of the alleged vandals.

Army personnel later arrived at the scene, rescued the injured, and transported them to the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur. Some of the critically injured were subsequently transferred to hospitals in Dhaka for further treatment.
