UN Secretary General António Guterres has reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting Bangladesh in its efforts to build a sustainable and equitable future for all. Guterres made the statement on Friday after a meeting with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Dhaka, on 14 March 2025.
“As Bangladesh undergoes important reforms and transitions, you can count on the UN to help build a sustainable and equitable future for all,” Guterres said in a post on social media. He also expressed gratitude to Prof Yunus, the interim government, and the people of Bangladesh for their warm welcome.
During their meeting, Guterres and Yunus discussed various issues of mutual concern, including the ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis. Following the meeting, Yunus accompanied Guterres on a visit to Cox’s Bazar, where they toured the under-construction Cox’s Bazar International Airport and the Khurushkul Climate Refugee Center.
In a show of solidarity with the Rohingya refugees, Guterres and Yunus will also visit the refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar. Together, they will share an Iftar meal with the refugees, marking the holy month of Ramadan. Guterres expressed his dedication to highlighting the challenges faced by vulnerable Muslim communities, stating, “Every Ramadan, I spend time with Muslim communities living in difficult circumstances, to observe the fast with them and help shine a spotlight on their plight.”
The UN Secretary General, who arrived in Dhaka on Thursday for a four-day visit at the invitation of the Chief Adviser, will also meet with youth and civil society representatives in Dhaka on Saturday. Additionally, Guterres is set to hold a joint press conference with Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain on Saturday afternoon.
