Home Adviser warns police to Awami League rallies

Home Affairs Adviser Lt Col (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has issued a stern warning to law enforcement, stating that disciplinary measures will be taken against police officials who fail to maintain order during Awami League (AL) rallies in the future.

The warning came on Saturday while speaking to reporters after visiting the Airport Police Station in Dhaka. Responding to questions about police inaction during recent AL processions, the adviser confirmed that two individuals have already been detained in connection with the unrest.

“The police have been instructed to ensure such rallies do not recur,” he said, adding that the government is actively working to enhance the overall law and order situation across the country.

Addressing concerns over delayed implementation of police transfer orders, Chowdhury stated that action will be taken if specific instances are brought to light.

He also noted that the government is reviewing the current transfer policy to consider intra-divisional postings for police personnel. “Posting officers far from their families limits their ability to take leave. With only 20 days of annual leave, many officers are unable to spend adequate time with their families. We’re exploring options for more localized postings,” he explained.

The adviser emphasized that his visit was also intended to assess and improve living and food conditions for police officers at station level, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving police welfare.
