The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) emphasized the importance of maintaining national unity, urging the interim government to uphold strict neutrality to prevent any political faction from gaining undue advantages.
At a press conference held at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office on Saturday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stressed that preserving the anti-fascist unity of the nation is crucial for the country’s progress. He stated, “The existing anti-fascist national unity is the main driving force of this country and its people. This nation must move forward by keeping this unity intact. There is no alternative to it.”
Fakhrul also emphasized that the practice of unity should become a central part of the nation’s political culture and warned against any actions that could threaten or weaken this unity. He added that the interim government must remain completely neutral and ensure that no group uses the government’s actions for political gain.
In his remarks, Fakhrul highlighted that the primary goal is to establish a non-discriminatory state and society, in line with the aspirations of the martyrs of the long anti-fascist democratic movement and the July mass uprising. “All our reform efforts will be focused on establishing a robust democratic political government based on broader national consensus—this is the expectation of the nation,” he said.
Reflecting on the years of struggle against fascism, Fakhrul noted that the people of Bangladesh were freed from it through the student-led uprising in July-August 2024. He stressed that the people now look forward to the realization of a democratic state that embodies equality, human dignity, and social justice.
Regarding the role of the military, Fakhrul expressed confidence in their participation in the election process, stating, “The Army has cooperated in elections before, and it is only natural that it will do so this time as well. We certainly have confidence in the Army.”
