US officials have showed a willingness to reduce the planned 35% additional tariffs on Bangladeshi imports, according to a media report. After the first day of third-round talks in Washington, Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman told the media that the rate would be “significantly reduced.” The new rate is yet to be fixed. Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said there is no security threat centring the August 5 anniversary of last year’s July uprising. “Hopefully, everything will go well,” he told reporters at the home ministry this afternoon. Asked about the recent special operations mentioned in a special branch report, Jahangir said, “This is not a countrywide operation. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is conducting it. The National Consensus Commission resumed talks with political parties on Wednesday to resolve seven pending issues related to constitutional reforms, including the method of electing the president, state principles, and women’s representation in parliament. A clash broke out between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Raozan upazila of Chattogram on Tuesday (July 29), centering around a party programme. During the incident, Chattogram North District BNP convenor Golam Akbar Khondkar was reportedly injured, along with several of his supporters. The incident took place in the Sattarghat area in the afternoon. Supporters of Khondkar alleged that the attack was carried out by members of the rival faction loyal to BNP Vice Chairman Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury. The National Consensus Commission (NCC) has prepared the draft ‘July National Charter 2025’, which emphasises that the political parties must implement the governance system reforms within two years of formation of the next elected parliament. Mohammed Suman, a photojournalist from Chattogram working with the Daily Kalbela, has won first prize in the prestigious ‘Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest’. The award was handed over by Ekaterina Semenova, Chargé d’Affaires of the Russian Embassy in Bangladesh. Suman, who has over 10 years of experience in photography, participated in the contest for the second time.
