The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) conducted a raid at the Chattogram Regional Election Commission office on Tuesday amid allegations of irregularities in the correction of National Identity Cards (NIDs).

A four-member ACC team, led by Assistant Director Emran Hossain from the ACC’s Chattogram Metro office, carried out the operation around noon. During the raid, ACC officials spoke with senior officers from both the regional and district election offices and examined various alleged irregularities.

According to sources, the ACC has been investigating four unresolved NID correction cases that had remained pending for an extended period. During their inquiry, the team also looked into four suspicious bank accounts reportedly linked to financial transactions associated with these corrections.

However, authorities at the election office failed to provide any details about the bank accounts. There are allegations that two senior officials from the regional and district election offices may have colluded in facilitating these NID corrections in exchange for money.

Speaking to reporters, Emran Hossain confirmed that the ACC had reviewed the four NID correction cases, which have since been resolved. “We are also investigating financial dealings related to these corrections. We have details of four bank account numbers allegedly used for transactions. The officials claim these accounts are not theirs, and we will verify the account holders’ identities,” he said.

In response to the ACC operation, Regional Election Officer Belayet Hossain told that the NID correction cases had already been settled.

“The ACC requested various information from our office, and we cooperated fully. If any of our staff members are found to be involved in irregularities, appropriate action will be taken,” he stated.

The ACC’s investigation is ongoing as it continues to gather evidence and verify the ownership of the disputed bank accounts.
