Veteran politician and BNP Vice Chairman Abdullah Al Nomaan was laid to rest today in Chattogram, after thousands of people, including BNP leaders, activists, and supporters, attended his funeral prayers.
The first janaza took place after Juma prayers at the Jamiatul Falah Mosque, where a large crowd gathered to pay their final respects. Among the attendees were BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Metropolitan Ameer Shahjahan Chowdhury, and BNP North District Convener Golam Akbar Khandaker.
Following the janaza, a state guard of honour was performed in tribute to the late leader.
Speaking at the funeral, BNP leader Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury praised Nomaan as a “complete politician” who was deeply connected with his activists and the masses. He described him as a humble and well-mannered individual who led numerous social movements.
Dr. Shahadat Hossain, the Mayor of Chattogram, remembered Nomaan as a leader of the people, highlighting his significant contributions to the city.
Abdullah Al Nomaan, a former minister and influential figure in the BNP, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 82. He fell ill at his home in Dhanmondi around 6:00 am and was rushed to Square Hospitals, where he was declared dead.
His body was flown to Chattogram Outer Stadium by helicopter, and from there, it was taken to his residence at VIP Tower in Kazi Deuri. The body was later brought to several locations, including Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and East Delta University, where students, teachers, and staff paid their tributes. At 11:00 am, his body was moved to BNP’s Chattogram city office at Nasimon Bhaban before being transported to the Jamiatul Falah Mosque for the janaza.
Nomaan’s son, Barrister Saeed Al Nomaan, confirmed that after the first janaza, his father’s body was taken to their family home in Gahira, Rauzan. After the Asr prayer, a second janaza was held at Gahira High School field, followed by his burial in the family graveyard.
