Former chief of Bangladesh Army and decorated freedom fighter Lt Gen (retd) M Harun-ur-Rashid has passed away. He died on Monday (August 4) in a room at Chattogram Club. The Bangladesh Army has expressed deep sorrow at his death.

His family members rushed to the scene after hearing the news. Dr Najibunnahar, a professor at Marine City Medical College and his cousin, said, “We believe it was a natural death. It seems he passed away peacefully in his sleep. He last spoke to family members around 8pm on Sunday night.”

A medical team from Chattogram Combined Military Hospital (CMH) arrived at the club and took his body to the hospital in the presence of family members.

Dr Najibunnahar also said that, after the army completes its formalities, the body will be handed over to us,” she added.

He will be buried at his family graveyard in Hathazari upazila.

His cousin Md Naushad told the People’s View that Harun-ur-Rashid arrived in Chattogram on Sunday evening (August 3) and checked into Chattogram Club. When he didn’t come out of his room and didn’t respond to repeated knocks, staff broke the door and found him lying on the floor. Police were then informed.

Lt Gen Harun-ur-Rashid served as the Chief of Army Staff from 2000 to 2002. He also held diplomatic positions after his retirement.
