Farhad Mazhar urges journalists to stand against all forms of fascism

Philosopher and human rights activist Farhad Mazhar has called on journalists to play an active role in fighting all types of fascism. Speaking at a discussion with journalists on Saturday (July 19) at Chattogram Press Club, he said, “There are different forms of fascism; secular, religious, and ideological. Journalists must stand against them all.”

He stressed the need for a people-oriented constitution and said, “The people of Bangladesh need to understand what a constitution is and why it matters. Only then can we protect democracy and prevent fascism from returning.”

Mazhar also spoke about Chattogram’s national importance, calling it the economic heart of the country. He warned that any harm to the port city would greatly impact the nation. He demanded an end to corruption at the Chattogram port and suggested separating customs from port operations.

Highlighting communal harmony in Chattogram, he said areas like Hathazari show how mosques and temples have coexisted peacefully for years. “We must preserve this unity,” he added.

He urged people not to label anyone as an extremist based on appearance or religious dress.

Other speakers included journalists, academics, and Press Club leaders, who warned against using media for anti-democratic activities and stressed professional unity.
