A three-year-old child died after falling into an open drain in Chattogram city’s Halishahar area on Wednesday. The body of the child was recovered around 3:45 PM, confirmed Kamrul Islam, a team leader at the Agrabad Fire Station.
Imon Dutta, sub-inspector of Halishahar Police Station, said, “We are on our way to the location. Our team and the fire service are already there. More details will be available later.”
This is not the first such tragedy in Chattogram. Over the past six years, at least 14 people have died after falling into the city’s canals and drains. Records show 2 deaths in 2020, 5 in 2021, 3 in 2023, 3 in 2024, and now 1 in 2025.
The last similar incident occurred on April 19 this year, when the body of a missing child named Sehrish was found in the Chaktai canal—14 hours after she fell into the Hijra canal in Kapasgola the previous night.
