A Chittagong University (CU) student has drowned while bathing in the sea at Cox’s Bazar, with two others still reported missing.

The incident occurred around 7:00am on Tuesday at the Himchhari sea beach point.

The deceased was identified as K M Shadnan Sabab Rahman (21), a student of the Department of Development Studies at the University of Chittagong, from the 2023–24 academic session. He was the son of K M Anisur Rahman from the Mirpur area of Dhaka.

The two students still missing are Asif Ahmed (22), son of Rafiqul Islam from Bogura, and Aritra (22), son of Aminul Islam, also from Bogura.

According to preliminary reports, the three friends were swept away by strong currents while bathing in the sea. They had come to visit Himchhari beach with another friend, making a group of four. Only one student stayed ashore while the other three entered the water.

Officer-in-Charge of the Himchhari Police Outpost, Sumnath Bose, stated, “The three friends entered the sea to bathe and were pulled away by the current. One body has been recovered, while two remain missing. Rescue operations are ongoing, with efforts from the Fire Service and Sea Safe Lifeguards.”

Authorities continue the search as family members and fellow students await updates with deep concern
