Vehicular movement on the Chattagram-Khagrachhri road remained suspended for an hour as Chittagong University students put up barricades on Thursday noon (July 4) , demanding cancellation of quota system in government jobs.

Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the road, causing immense suffering for commuters.

According to local sources, students began protesting near the university’s gate no-1 around 12:30 pm. At one stage, they staged sit-in on the busy road. They demanded cancellation of all quotas in government jobs, except for those designated for people with disabilities and individuals from underdeveloped districts.

During the blockade, students voiced their concerns, declaring that no discrimination will be allowed through the quota system. They emphasized the need for measures to ensure that people with disabilities and those from underdeveloped districts can avail the quota opportunity once, to prevent general students from being deprived of their desired jobs.

The students left the spot at around 1:30 pm as Proctor of the university  and the Officer-in-Charge of Hathazari Police Station rushed to the spot and assured them to convey their message to the government.Vehicular movement resumed after the students went back to the university campus.

Proctor Dr. Ahidul Alam said reporters `The students can write to the Prime Minister through the vice –chancellor office about their demands. We will send it through DC office.’

Earlier on Wednesday, students blocked the same road on the same spot demanding cancellation quota system.
