A Dhaka court has officially declared BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as the mayor of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), overturning the results of the 2020 DSCC election. The ruling was issued on Thursday by Dhaka’s First Joint District Judge, Md Nurul Islam, who is overseeing the Election Tribunal.
Ishraque’s lawyer, Rafiqul Islam, confirmed the court’s decision to the media.
Ishraque Hossain had contested the DSCC mayoral election held on February 1, 2020. However, on March 3, 2020, he filed a case with the Election Tribunal, challenging the election results due to alleged irregularities, corruption, and lack of credibility in the process.
Ishraque Hossain, who was present in court when the verdict was announced, is the son of Sadeque Hossain Khoka, the former mayor of the undivided Dhaka City Corporation.
