As the Dudhkumar River continues to erode its banks following an untimely rise in water levels, more than a hundred families in the Kharuarpar Sabujpara area of Ghogadaha Union, Kurigram Sadar Upazila, are living in dire conditions after losing their homes. At least 25 people were injured in a violent clash between residents of two villages in Gopinathpur, Hamirdi Union of Bhanga Upazila, Faridpur, over land disputes. The confrontation on Sunday afternoon also saw houses and shops vandalized and looted. Local sources said the conflict traces back to a dispute between Simon Matubbar and Kuddus Matubbar on Friday, which escalated into a fistfight. Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Limited (CUFL), a state-owned fertiliser factory in Anwara upazila of Chattogram, resumed production early Sunday after being closed for seven months. Factory officials said urea production at CUFL began again at 3:30 am on Sunday. The plant was shut down due to a gas shortage which caused production losses of about Tk 3 crore daily. Mizanur Rahman, managing director of CUFL, said that the Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL) stopped gas supply to the factory on April 11, completely halting production. Respected members of ‘Priyo Anwara’ (প্রিয় আনোয়ারা) have shared their opinions on the possibility of renaming the platform in light of potential future administrative re-demarcation, should Anwara Upazila be upgraded to a city corporation or pourashava.
