Age limit for public service raised to 32, sitting for BCS exams to be allowed thrice

The interim government has raised age limit for public service to 32 amid job seekers’ demonstrations for the raising the maximum age to 35.

This Council of Advisers took the decision in its 10th meeting on Thursday chaired by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus.

The government also capped the number a candidate can take the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examinations at three. There is currently no cap on the number of times candidates can sit for BCS exams.

According to the decision, the maximum age limit for recruitment in all cadres under the  Bangladesh Civil Service and all other government jobs which not under the Bangladesh Civil Service will be 32.

The new age limit will be applied in the autonomous and semi-autonomous organisations with necessary adaptations.

In the case of defense sevices and law enforcement agencies their respective recruitment rules will remain unchanged.

Besides, under Section 59 of the ‘Government Service Act- 2018,’ the Ministry of Public Administration will amend the ‘Bangladesh Civil Service (Age, Qualification, and Direct Recruitment Examination) Rules- 2014’ to include the provision allowing a candidate to appear for the Bangladesh Civil Service examination up to three times.

Currently the maximum age of entry into government service is 30.

Job seekers have been demanding for raising the entry age for government jobs for the last several years. Job aspirants started demonstrations to press home the same demand after the fall of Hasina government.
