In honor of the brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the Bengali language on February 21, 1952, the Chattogram Press Club and Chattogram Metropolitan Union of Journalists’ (CMUJ) leaders laid floral wreaths at the Shaheed Minar.

The formal tribute took place at 12:01 am at the newly renovated Central Shaheed Minar in Chattogram, led by the convener of Chattogram Press Club and the district commissioner, Farida Khanam. Also present were Press Club General Secretary Zahidul Karim Kochi, President of the Chattogram Metropolitan Union of Journalists’ (CMUJ) Mohammad Shahnewaz, General Secretary Saleh Noman, along with other prominent journalist leaders from Chattogram.

Earlier, the tribute ceremony had commenced with the wreath-laying by Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, marking the reopening of the Central Shaheed Minar to the public after four years.

On this day in 1952, students and people from all backgrounds took to the streets in Dhaka to protest the Pakistani government’s refusal to recognize Bangla as a state language, instead pushing for Urdu to be the only official language of Pakistan.
