Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali has stressed the importance of sports in keeping young people away from drugs, terrorism and social degradation.
He said cricket and other sporting activities play a vital role in the physical and mental development of young people and help develop discipline, leadership skills, mutual harmony and a competitive spirit among them.
The CMP commissioner made these observations while speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of Rafi Smrithi Metropolitan Junior (Under-18) Cricket League 2026 at city’s Dampara Police Lines ground on Thursday.
Chattogram Metropolitan Sports Association and CMP jointly organised the event.
“The tournament would help nurture talented young cricketers and create opportunities for them to represent Chattogram at the national level”, the chief guest said.
Osman Gani Mansur, editor and publisher of The Daily People’s View and father of late Rafi, attended the program as a special guest.
Besides, CMP Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Hossain Mohammad Kabir Bhuiyan, Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) Muhammad Faisal Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner (Headquarters) Md. Ferdous Ali Chowdhury, BPM, and Deputy Commissioner (DB-South) Sheikh Shariful Islam, Chattogram Press Club President Zahidul Karim Kochi and Chattogram Metropolitan Sports Association General Secretary Freedom Fighter Shahabuddin Ahammad Chowdhury were also present on the occasion.
