The government is planning to construct two new hospitals in the Hathazari and Karnaphuli areas to ease the mounting pressure on Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH), Health Advisor Nurjahan Begum announced today.
Speaking at a discussion held at the Chattogram Circuit House on urban flooding and the development of the Oxygen-Hathazari Highway, Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus was joined by several key officials, including Nurjahan Begum.
Addressing concerns about overcrowding at CMCH, the health advisor stated, “The hospital was built to accommodate 2,200 patients, but it’s currently treating nearly 5,000. I witnessed patients receiving treatment on floors, including near restrooms. To ensure better healthcare delivery, we’re planning to build hospitals in Hathazari and Karnaphuli.”
She explained that the new Hathazari hospital would benefit patients from Rangamati and Kaptai, while the Karnaphuli facility would serve people from Patiya, Satkania, and Chandanaish.
Nurjahan also revealed plans to establish Chattogram’s first dental college and hospital in the Kalurghat area, noting the current lack of such a facility in the region.
The meeting was attended by several other advisors, including Education Advisor C. R. Abrar, Fisheries and Livestock Advisor Farida Akhtar, Road Advisor Fauzul Kabir Khan, Liberation War Affairs Advisor Faruk-E-Azam, Chief Advisor’s Special Envoy Lutfe Siddique, BIDA representative Chowdhury Ashiq Mahmud Bin Harun, and SDG Coordinator Lamia Morshed, among others.
