A seminar on photojournalism titled “Photography Talk with Osman Gani Mansur” was held at Port City International University (PCIU) on Tuesday, says a press release.

PCIU Media Club of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies organized the event where PCIU Vice-Chancellor Dr Muhammad Tayeb Chowdhury attended as the chief guest while Mainul Hasan Chowdhury, dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Law and Arts, was present as special guest and veteran photojournalist Osman Gani Mansur was the keynote speaker.

Dilruba Akter, chairperson of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, presided over the seminar attended by teachers and students of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies.

Sharing his experiences and challenges from his long career in journalism, Mansur discussed the history of photojournalism in Bangladesh, the role of photojournalists at significant moments in the country’s history and various practical aspects of the profession.

He placed particular emphasis on professional ethics and responsibility in photojournalism.

A journalist’s responsibility to present news with truth, neutrality and objectivity is essential, he said adding that journalism and photojournalism are not merely about capturing images or disseminating information but it also involves ethics, a sense of responsibility and sustained effort.

While referring to various experiences and challenges from his professional career, Mansur urged students to practise photojournalism, develop their powers of observation and focus on acquiring professional skills.

He also shared insights into the development of photojournalism in Bangladesh, professional realities and experiences of working in the field.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Muhammad Tayeb Chowdhury delivered the welcome address that continued with speeches by the special guest and keynote speaker. Later there was an exchange of experiences with the students.

Dilruba Akter in her concluding remarks urged the students to learn from the lives and professional experiences of veteran journalists and develop their own skills, values and professionalism.

She also called upon them to play responsible, humane and ethical roles in journalism in the future.

The seminar provided students of the department with an opportunity to gain practical insights into photojournalism, professional ethics and various aspects of field-level journalism.

At the end of the programme, prizes were distributed among the winners of a feature-writing competition.
