BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir confirmed that the issue of the election timeline was not discussed during his party’s meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today.
Guterres participated in a roundtable discussion with the National Consensus Commission and political leaders at a Dhaka hotel, which included Fakhrul and members of the Reform Commission. The meeting, organized under the UN’s initiative, aimed to address ongoing political and electoral reforms in Bangladesh.
Fakhrul stated that BNP representatives informed the UN chief about the need to expedite election-related reforms to ensure the timely holding of the next national election. He emphasized that while reforms are an ongoing process, the remaining changes should be completed through the new parliament. However, he added that Guterres did not provide any comments on this matter during the meeting.
Also present at the meeting were BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed, along with several political figures including Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul, Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission Professor Dr. Ali Riaz, and other leaders from various political groups, including the National Citizens Party, Jamaat, Gana Sanghati Andolan, and the CPB.
