Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun has admitted to his involvement in crimes against humanity committed during last year’s July uprising, commonly referred to as the July massacre.
Appearing before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Thursday, Mamun said, “I was involved in the July killings. I wish to testify as a prosecution witness in this case of my own accord.”
At the time of the incident, Mamun was serving as the chief of police.
Earlier in the day, the tribunal formally framed charges against three accused, including deposed former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, in a case over crimes against humanity during the July events.
Rejecting their discharge petitions, the three-member tribunal—headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mojumdar and comprising Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury—ordered the trial to proceed.
With this, formal trial proceedings have commenced against Sheikh Hasina and two others in the July massacre case.
