Election Commission focused on fair and transparent elections

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin reiterated today that the Election Commission (EC) is not working to implement anyone’s specific agenda, emphasizing that its sole mission is to conduct a free, fair, transparent, and credible election for the people of Bangladesh.

“We are working for the 18 crore people of Bangladesh, and our agenda is only to ensure a credible election, nothing else,” the CEC stated during a discussion on the 7th National Voter Day, held at the Nirbachan Bhaban auditorium in Agargaon, Dhaka.

This year, National Voter Day is being observed under the theme “Tomar Amar Bangladeshe, Vote Dibo Milemishe” (In Our Bangladesh, We Share the Right to Vote).

Nasir Uddin underscored the importance of the right to vote, recalling the struggle Bangladeshis faced to secure this fundamental right. “The right to vote is something we earned through immense effort, and now our focus is on safeguarding this right and organizing a smooth and acceptable election,” he said.

The CEC stressed the need for political consensus regarding the electoral code of conduct. “It is vital for voters to see casting their vote as a duty and contribute to ensuring a free and fair election,” he added. While acknowledging that political leaders often have differing opinions, Nasir Uddin highlighted that consensus among political parties is crucial for a peaceful election process.

He further remarked, “While it’s possible that someone may manipulate the election, history shows they cannot survive in the long run,” expressing hope that such attempts would not be made in future elections.

The event also featured the distribution of smart National Identity (NID) cards to 13 youths who were injured during the July Uprising and are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals.

As of March 2, 2025, Bangladesh’s voter list stands at 12,18,32,274 eligible voters, with 6,33,61,615 male voters, 6,03,69,665 female voters, and 994 voters from the third gender.

Election Commissioners Tahmida Ahmad and Brig Gen (Retd) Abdul Fazal Md Sanaullah also addressed the occasion. The event included a procession marking National Voter Day, which paraded through the streets of Dhaka.
