Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has officially announced the commencement of construction on the long-awaited road and rail bridge over the Karnaphuli River at Kalurghat in Chattogram.

The foundation stone plaque was unveiled during a ceremony held at 11:00 AM today at the Chattogram Circuit House.

Muhammad Fawzul Kabir Khan, Adviser for Road Transport and Bridges, stated that the construction of a new Kalurghat Bridge has been a long-standing demand of the people of southern Chattogram, especially residents of Boalkhali. The existing bridge, built in 1931, had a projected lifespan of 80 years, which officially ended in 2011. “The local community is overjoyed that construction is finally beginning,” he added.

The new bridge is expected to be completed by 2029 and open to the public in 2030.

Speaking at the inauguration, Chief Adviser Yunus remarked, “Kalurghat Bridge holds many memories for me. It has great historical significance. Today, even residents of Boalkhali are present here — this bridge has been their long-cherished dream. Once completed, it will greatly ease the suffering of Chattogram residents.”

This marks Professor Muhammad Yunus’s first visit to Chattogram since assuming the role of Chief Adviser.
