BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today reaffirmed his party’s unwavering support for press freedom, saying that the party would continue to uphold it regardless of whether it holds power.
“We can state with absolute clarity and conviction that we have always supported press freedom, we continue to do so, and will stand by it in the future—whether in government or not, wherever we may be. You can be assured of this,” said Fakhrul.
He was speaking at a discussion organised by the Editors’ Council at the Jatiya Press Club to mark World Press Freedom Day.
“We fought against the oppression and persecution of journalists faced in the past. We continue to do so today.”
He stressed that the BNP rejects all forms of coercion aimed at silencing dissent.
“In the clearest, strongest terms, we want to say that we will never support the unjust imposition of one’s views on others,” he said, adding,”We firmly uphold the right to freedom of thought and expression. This is our belief. This is our thought.”
