Donald Trump’s administration on Thursday revoked Harvard’s ability to enroll foreign nationals — more than a quarter of the student body — in a dramatic escalation of the US president’s fight against the prestigious university. The school in Cambridge, Massachusetts quickly slammed the move as “unlawful” and said it would hurt both the campus and the country, while one student said the community was “panicking.” Trump is furious at Harvard — which has produced 162 Nobel prize winners — for rejecting his demand that it submit to oversight on admissions and hiring over his claims that it is…
BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed on Friday commented the state will find an alternate mechanism if Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus feels he is incapable of fulfilling his duties of announcing an election roadmap. “No one is indispensable in this world,” the BNP senior leader said at a television programme. It will be Prof Yunus’s personal stance, if he wants to quit from his post instead of announcing the roadmap for next general elections, Salahuddin said, adding BNP has not made any demand in this regard. However, BNP hopes that Prof Yunus, being a world-renowned figure,…
Stating that the delay in holding the next parliamentary elections is fuelling instability in the country, BNP leader Zainul Abedin Farroque on Friday said his party would be aggrieved if interim government chief Professor Muhammad Yunus were to depart in disgrace. “There appears to be a wave of unrest sweeping the country. Who are the main culprits behind this instability? Who is attempting to delay the election? We wish to know these things from a great person like you (Dr Yunus),” he told a protest rally. Farroque, a member of the BNP chairperson’s advisory council, said…
Amid the speculation over the resignation of the chief adviser, Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan has said that the next national election will be held either by December this year or by June next year as committed by Prof Muhammad Yunus. “Shifting a day from this timeline… from our side, there is no chance,” she asserted. Rizwana made the remarks clarifying the government’s stance regarding the election while talking to reporters after attending the “24th National Conference and AGM 2024 of the Zoological Society of Bangladesh” at Dhaka University on Friday. She said, “We are not in…

BNP’s continued support for the government will be difficult if the government does not announce the roadmap for the national election by December this year, said Standing Committee Member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Thursday. The top priority is now to establish a political government, imbued with the spirit of the July mass upsurge, in a bid to restore the people’s democratic, constitutional, voting and human rights, he said. “We demand a clear roadmap for the national election to be held in a free, fair and impartial manner by December this year. It should be the main agenda of…

Pakistan will not get water from rivers over which India has rights, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday, a month after a deadly attack in Indian Kashmir led New Delhi to suspend a key river water-sharing treaty between the neighbours. The suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, negotiated by the World Bank in 1960, was among a slew of measures announced by India against Pakistan last month after the April 22 attack that killed 26 men, mostly Hindu tourists. New Delhi had said the attack was backed by Pakistan – an accusation Islamabad denied – and…

He made the announcement while talking to the party men outside Kakrail mosque this afternoon. “Following the High Court verdict, our party has decided that the movement will remain suspended and we will observe the government’s actions in the next 24 to 48 hours. The next course of action will be taken based on this,” he said. The announcement came hours after he urged protesters not to leave the streets and to intensify their movement. He…
The protesting officials, under the banner of “the NBR Reform Unity Council,” today announced a fresh five-day programme, demanding the immediate removal of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) chairman alongside the repeal of the new ordinance. The development, which apparently shows a deepening crisis in the revenue administration over the dissolution of the NBR through a new ordinance, comes as the officials resumed demonstrations this morning, saying that talks with government advisers over the repeal of the new ordinance had not been fruitful. With this, the demonstration entered its sixth day, hampering trade, business operations, and…
