Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has officially announced the commencement of construction on the long-awaited road and rail bridge over the Karnaphuli River at Kalurghat in Chattogram. The foundation stone plaque was unveiled during a ceremony held at 11:00 AM today at the Chattogram Circuit House. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir went to Bangkok, Thailand for emergency eye treatment early on Tuesday. Fakhrul, along with his wife Rahat Ara Begum, left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for Bangkok at 2:45 am on a Thai Airways flight, said BNP media cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has finally agreed to disburse the next two tranches of its $4.7 billion loan package for Bangladesh, amounting to $1.3 billion, in June. The Election Commission (EC) on Monday night suspended the registration of Awami League as a political party, hours after the government issued a notification in this regard. EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed the matter at a press briefing at 9pm. Earlier, in the afternoon, the government issued a notification banning all the political activities of Awami League and its affiliated bodies until trials against the party members are completed at the International Crimes Tribunal. The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has submitted its report against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun in a case filed over genocide committed during the July-August uprising. The report was handed over to Chief Prosecutor Tazul Islam by the coordinator and officials of the tribunal’s investigation agency at 10:55am on Monday.
