Islami Andolan Bangladesh has urged the government to ensure the trial of those involved in the killing spree that took place in July, in line with the directive of deposed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The religion-based political party has also underscored the need for reforms of the state mechanism, paving the path for holding the next general election under the Proportional Representation (PR) system, in which the distribution of seats corresponds closely with the proportion of the total votes cast for each party.
While addressing a mammoth rally at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on Saturday afternoon, Maulana Gazi Ataur Rahman, spokesperson of the party, read out a 16-point declaration to press home their demand.
In the 16-point declaration, Rahman urged the government to ensure reforms in the state organs in a bid to prevent the recurrence of fascism and restore good governance reflecting the people’s opinions.
The government must announce the July Charter within the next month to fulfil the aspirations of the student-led mass upsurge and to build a nation free from repression and corruption, he said.
The basic and essential reforms must urgently be implemented to ensure that no elected autocrat, corrupts, frauds, or criminals can abuse state power to deprive people of their rights and destroy constitutional institutions through partisan and nepotism or establish a one-party authoritarian rule in the country in the coming days, he said.
He also called upon the interim government to reshuffle the public administration from top to bottom to create a level playing field ahead of the national election likely to be held before Ramadan next year.
The cohorts of the defeated Sheikh Hasina-led fascist government, who are still hanging on to important positions of the state, must be identified first and then driven out of the administration, he said.
Trial of the close associates of the previous government must be ensured and the arrest of the Awami League leaders who fled the country must be made through initiating effective diplomatic efforts, said the leader.
