Container handling rises at Chattogram Port

Chattogram Dry Dock Limited (CDDL) has seen an increase in average daily container handling at the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) after taking over operational control from July 7.

According to port sources, during CDDL’s first week in charge—from July 7 to 13—the terminal handled an average of 3,181 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) per day, up from 2,956 TEUs handled daily by the previous operator, Saif Powertec Limited, in the week prior. This marks an increase of 225 TEUs per day.

The NCT had long been operated by Saif Powertec Limited under a contract with the Chattogram Port Authority. The contract expired on July 6, and as per the directive from the Ministry of Shipping, CDDL officially assumed operational responsibility the following day.

During the seven-day period under CDDL, 10 vessels were successfully handled, with container loading and unloading operations running simultaneously at four jetties.

On July 9, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Nazmul Hassan visited the NCT and inspected various key points including NCT-2 Jetty, the Container Examination Point, and the CTMS (Container Terminal Management System) building. His visit highlighted the Navy’s active involvement in both national security and the country’s commercial development efforts. He also offered operational guidance to CDDL personnel and other stakeholders engaged in port activities.

Port Secretary Md Omar Faruk told that CDDL’s management has brought improvements in smooth container handling, unstuffing, and delivery. “The average daily handling is increasing day by day,” he added.
