A violent unfolded on Wednesday night at the residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, located at Dhanmondi 32, as protesters broke into the house, vandalized the premises, and set parts of it on fire. The disturbance escalated as agitated students gathered in front of the house, chanting various slogans.
Around evening on Wednesday, a large crowd of students began to congregate in front of the house. As time passed, the crowd swelled. Protesters chanted slogans such as “Give the news to all, bury Mujibism,” “Delhi or Dhaka, Dhaka Dhaka,” “Give the news to all, bury the Awami League,” and “Down with Mujibism, long live revolution.”
Following a previously announced plan, the protesters entered the house at around 8 p.m. and began vandalizing the property while chanting slogans. The mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, which was placed at the entrance, was also destroyed during the unrest.
On-site reports indicated widespread damage, with students relentlessly breaking down parts of the building’s infrastructure. In addition to the vandalism, fire was set to parts of the second floor. This follows an earlier incident on August 5, when the same house had been set ablaze.
Angry students voiced their frustrations, stating, “Autocrat Sheikh Hasina is going to give a speech under the banner of Chhatra League today. The same person who fled the country after shooting our brothers. How can she announce a program? We will not allow any existence of Bangabandhu or Sheikh Hasina in this country.”
This latest act of protest comes after the exiled former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced her participation in a virtual session with the banned Chhatra League. In response, the July Revolutionary Alliance declared a “Long March to Dhanmondi-32” protest at around 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
