Senior BNP leader Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has announced that individuals who were previously supporters of the Awami League but did not obstruct BNP’s activities and are considered socially acceptable may be allowed to join the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
He made the remarks on Saturday as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of BNP’s ‘Membership Renewal Campaign’ for the Chattogram division. The event was held at the party office premises in Kazir Dewri, Chattogram.
“This is a rare opportunity to actively recruit new members after a long time, and we must seize it,” said Khasru. “It is a matter of pride to join BNP, the largest political party in the country. Every unit of the party should organize public events for membership drives, and these should be promoted both in mainstream media and on Facebook.”
He emphasized that during the recruitment process, caution must be exercised. “We will not accept individuals who are socially unacceptable, involved in extortion, violence, or corruption—those who might reduce our vote bank. Also, we won’t accept current Awami League members. However, if someone was once a supporter of the Awami League but did not act against us—did not oppress us, and even quietly supported us—they may be considered for membership,” he clarified.
He stressed that no one should be secretly inducted into the party. “Joining BNP must be a public declaration, not a hidden move,” he added.
The event was presided over by BNP’s Chattogram divisional organizational secretary Mahbuber Rahman Shamim and conducted by assistant organizational secretary Barrister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin. Other notable speakers included BNP joint secretary general Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie and Chattogram city BNP convener Ershad Ullah.
The membership campaign aims to expand the party’s grassroots strength ahead of the next national election.
