Amir Khasru Mahmood Chowdhury, a senior member of the BNP’s Standing Committee, has emphasized the importance of respecting opposing views in politics. Speaking at an iftar and prayer event organized by the Chittagong Press Club and Chittagong Metropolitan Union of Journalists’ (CMUJ) on Tuesday at Chattogram.
Chowdhury stressed that unless the political culture changes, reforms would be of no benefit. He called for tolerance in politics, urging all parties to respect differing opinions. He further declared that such a culture of mutual respect would define BNP’s politics and that of Tarique Rahman, aiming for progress in the future.
During his speech, Chowdhury underscored the crucial role of the media in shaping the democratic landscape of Bangladesh. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by media professionals over the last 16 years, who, despite facing difficulties, have played a pivotal role in resisting fascism and advancing democratic unity. Chowdhury stressed that the media must continue to play a strong role in restoring the democratic rights of the people and cautioned the media against attempts to influence their independence.
The event, held at Chittagong Club, was presided over by Farida Khanam, District Commissioner and convener of the Chittagong Press Club and presented by Saleh Noman, General Secretary of CMUJ, special guests included Dr. Shahadat Hossain, Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation, Barrister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin, BNP’s central assistant organizational secretary, and Abdul Hai Shikdar, editor of Daily Jugantor. Other notable attendees included Ayub Bhuiyan, General Secretary of the National Press Club, Obaidur Rahman Shamim, acting president of BFUJ, and Kader Goni Chowdhury, BFUJ secretary general.
In his speech, Dr. Shahadat Hossain noted that the people of Bangladesh have been deprived of their voting rights for 17 years. He highlighted the public’s desire to reclaim democracy, good governance, and fundamental rights, asserting that national elections would be the only way to choose representatives. He also spoke about Tarique Rahman’s 31-point framework, which he described as vital for rebuilding the state structure and establishing a democratic governance system.
Barrister Mir Helal emphasized the importance of media freedom, stating that without it, truth cannot be revealed, and without truth, credibility is lost. Abdul Hai Shikdar echoed this, urging journalists to practice responsible journalism based on truth and integrity, avoiding sensationalism and misinformation that mislead the public.
Obaidur Rahman Shamim pointed out that some media outlets publish biased news for political or economic gain, which erodes public trust in independent journalism. He encouraged journalists to remain vigilant in this challenging environment.
The event also saw addresses from various figures, including interim committee member of the Press Club Zahidul Karim Kochi, CMUJ President Mohammad Shah Nawaz, and other distinguished guests.
The gathering concluded with remarks from several local political leaders, media professionals, and members of civil society, all committed to strengthening democracy and the role of the media in safeguarding the public’s democratic rights.
