Deaths from a devastating monsoon flood surged past 270 across Pakistan on Sunday, highlighting the alarmingly worsening impact of climate change in South Asia.

The state-owned National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) updated the death toll, saying children accounted for nearly half the fatalities, while 655 people were injured overall.

Punjab province leads casualties with 145 fatalities, Geo TV reported, citing NDMA figures.

Authorities have warned of further catastrophe in a new spell of rains throughout the rest of the week.

Also, a total of 1,192 houses have been damaged so far, along with 367 animals (livestock) that were also killed.

Out of those who died, 93 were men, 47 were women, and 132 were children. Whereas the injured include 257 men, 182 women and 216 children.

It is to be noted that the Met Office has said that weak monsoon currents continue to affect the upper and central regions and are expected to intensify as a fresh westerly system approaches on 29 July.

Widespread rainfall, with occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms, is expected in many regions.
