BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman on Wednesday said the victory in the mass uprising on 5 August last year could not have been achieved by any single party or individual alone.
“The July movement against the Awami League’s misrule is not the sole effort of any party or person, but belongs to all. People from all walks of life contributed to and supported this movement,” he said at a programme in London.
The event marked the 41st death anniversary of former minister and Chief of Naval Staff Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali Khan. He was also the father of Zubaida Rahman, wife of Tarique Rahman.
The BNP leader said, “The country has undergone a transformation through a revolution or political movement. Being activists of a political party, we worked at various times to make this movement a success. People from all walks of life took to the streets to support the movement, and that is why it succeeded. As a result, Bangladesh has been freed from autocracy.”
He said, “I have been living abroad for almost 17 years… I sincerely thank all Bangladeshi expatriates around the world who have contributed to the movement against this autocratic government, inspired people through social media, and played a vital role in its success. I hope that just as you supported the movement in the past, you will also stand by the upcoming democratic government in the same way.”
Tarique said, “Mahbub Ali was a true patriot who served the country with dedication. Those of us in politics are here to serve the people. Today, the country has witnessed a significant change, and the people have become more aware.
“I would like to request all of you to make the best use of this opportunity we now have — to stand beside the people and take the country forward. Let us dedicate ourselves to the cause of those martyrs who sacrificed their lives for Bangladesh,” he added.
