NCP Convener Nahid Islam has called on his party members and the student-people to lift all blockades across the country after a section of students announced the demonstration.
The blockades followed two major attacks by local Awami League activists on an NCP rally at Pourapark area, Gopalganj town, which seriously threatened the lives of NCP top leadership.
NCP Chief Organiser (Southern Region) Sarjis Alam announced Nahid’s call for withdrawing blockades in a facebook post around 5.30pm on Wednesday.
“Lift the blockades. Take positions on any one side of roads. The fight will continue,” Nahid said, according to Sarjis’s post.
Separately, NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary also called on general people to lift blockades and take positions on the streets.
In the morning, miscreants set fire to a police van, and after a short interval, vandalised the car of Gopalganj Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer. Police blamed Awami League, which has been banned as a political entity, for both the attacks.
Later, in the noon, Awami League activists swoop on a rally of NCP, attacking NCP partymen, vandalising chairs and sound system. NCP leaders evacuated the spot, but half-an-hour later returned under police protection.
However, the second round of Awami League attacks were more devastating, prompting the police to fall back and leaving the NCP top leadership unguarded. Seeking shelter, the leaders fled to the police superintendent’s office.
