A dedicated Pediatric Kidney unit has officially opened at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), marking a significant step forward in specialized care for children with kidney diseases. The ward was inaugurated on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. on the hospital’s second floor.
The opening ceremony was graced by chief guest Professor Dr. Mohammad Hanif, a renowned pediatric nephrologist. The event was presided over by Professor Dr. Sanat Kumar Barua, Head of the Pediatric Kidney Department.
Special guests included CMCH Director Brigadier General Md. Taslim Uddin, Deputy Director Dr. Mohammad Elias Chowdhury, Vice Principal of Chittagong Medical College Professor Dr. Abdur Rob, and several distinguished physicians from various departments, including pediatric medicine, surgery, and nephrology.
Associate Professor Dr. Maruf-ul-Kader from the nephrology department delivered the welcome speech, while Dr. Susmita Sen presented an overview of the new ward’s medical services. The event was hosted by Dr. Tasfisa Tabassum.
Professor Dr. Mohammad Hanif highlighted the growing number of children affected by kidney diseases in Bangladesh and stressed the importance of raising awareness. “The launch of this specialized ward marks the beginning of a new chapter in child healthcare at CMCH. With this, we expect to reduce reliance on Dhaka for advanced treatment and provide high-quality care locally,” he said.
Initially, a small 11-bed unit was introduced at CMCH on December 11, 2013, to treat pediatric kidney patients. Due to rising demand, the bed count was later increased to 15. Recognizing the need for a safer and more comprehensive treatment environment, the hospital has now established this independent ward equipped with advanced facilities.
CMCH Director Brigadier General Md. Taslim Uddin reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to providing safe and improved treatment services for children. Dr. Maruf-ul-Kader also noted that the new ward would significantly enhance the hospital’s capacity to deliver quality care, including dialysis services, in a child-friendly environment.
The launch of this ward is expected to improve pediatric kidney care across the region and ease the burden on families seeking specialized treatment for their children.
