BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has called for swift action to institutionalise democracy in Bangladesh, emphasising unity and justice for victims of political violence.
“The opportunity we have before us to institutionalise the democratic system must be completed quickly,” she said while virtually addressing a discussion meeting in Dhaka today.
She called on everyone to maintain unity, saying, “Let us all come together and make the dream of Shaheed Zia a reality. The dream of building a new Bangladesh for millions of people.”
She also demanded a comprehensive list of victims of abduction, murder, and extrajudicial killings.
“We must ensure prompt justice and state recognition. Every family must be provided with honourable rehabilitation and a secure future,” she said.
Highlighting the critical need for development, the former prime minister said, “We must create employment opportunities, ensure public safety, and, above all, protect the sovereignty and independence of Bangladesh at any cost.”
In her speech, she emphasised the importance of honouring the sacrifices made by the nation’s heroes.
“We must ensure that the blood of our heroes and the tears of our mothers do not go in vain,” she said.
Khaleda also celebrated the collective power of the student masses, saying that through their united uprising, fascism had been defeated.
She expressed optimism about the chance to rebuild Bangladesh.
“Through this movement, we express our sincere respect for those who became martyrs and condolences for the injured. The nation will forever remember their sacrifice,” she added.
The BNP chairperson also said, “For 16 long years, the fascists destroyed democracy through brutal oppression, torture, arrests, murder, abduction, and killings, and the Awami League sought to establish a one-party regime permanently.”
