BNP activists on Monday blocked the crucial Purana Paltan-Bangshal road in Gulistan area, demanding the government appoint BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
The blockade of a road marked a major shift following four days of protests at Nagar Bhaban, the DSCC headquarters, when they had padlocked the building. On Monday, they kept the building padlocked.
The BNP protesters claimed Ishraque has already received the court’s clearance for assuming the role of DSCC mayor, but alleged that the government is delaying the process in “a contempt of court.”
Local Government and Rural Development Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan was behind the crisis, the BNP members said, demanding Asif’s resignation.
They warned the blockade would continue until Ishraque is appointed as the DSCC mayor, and threatened stricter movement in the coming days.
