BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has described the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as a “disgrace to the nation” and said she should never be forgiven.
Speaking at a tree plantation programme at Zia Udyan in Dhaka on Sunday, held jointly by the Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal and the BNP-affiliated platform ‘Amra BNP Poribar’ as part of the month-long July mass uprising campaign, Fakhrul made the remarks.
“A mother of a martyr wept as she said that the boy she had dreamed of and envisioned her future with was taken away from her,” Fakhrul said.
“They snatched him in a cruel, horrific, and brutal manner. He was shot and thrown into a van. Without checking if he was alive or dead, they burnt him along with six or seven others. Can you imagine? We are citizens of an independent country!” he added.
He also said, “We fought the Liberation War in 1971 for an independent country. The administration responsible for protecting the state — whose salaries come from our taxes —killed and burnt our children. It is cruel, barbaric, and inhuman. Therefore, Hasina can never be forgiven.”
Fakhrul further announced that BNP would set up a fund for the injured and families of martyrs from the July movement. “I said yesterday and I say again today: elections will take place. Who will take charge in the elections is another matter,” he said.
He added, “I will ask the acting chairman to establish a fund on behalf of the party to rehabilitate the injured and martyr families. ‘Amra BNP Poribar’ has already stood by these families.”
