DU students besiege Shahbagh police station, issue 48-hr ultimatum

Several hundred students of Dhaka University laid siege to Shahbagh police station on Friday, demanding swift action and immediate arrest of those involved in the murder of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader and final-year student at the Institute of Education and Research.

Agitated students also gave authorities a 48-hour ultimatum to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The protest began shortly before noon, with students marching in a procession from the base of the Anti-terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture to Shahbagh police station.

Upon arrival there, they staged a sit-in and chanted slogans demanding justice for Shammo and the arrest of the killers.

Later, a student delegation entered the police station and held discussions with senior officers regarding the progress of the investigation.

However, demonstrators expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing process, alleging that the real perpetrators have yet to be apprehended.

“Many things are happening around Shammo’s murder, but there has been no trial, no real progress. It seems like the actual criminals are still at large. We fear that some people not involved in the incident may be wrongfully targeted,” said a protesting student, urging the authorities to conduct a proper and high-level investigation.

A group of miscreants stabbed Shammo in the Suhrawardy Udyan area in the early hours of 14 May. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where the on-duty physicians declared him dead.

Shammo was a student of the 2018–19 session at the Institute of Education and Research, and literary and publication secretary of the Chhatra Dal’s AF Rahman Hall unit.

Shariful Islam, elder brother of the deceased, filed a murder case with Shahbagh police station, accusing 10 to 12 unidentified people.

Meanwhile, the police arrested three people in connection with the murder.
