The interim government of Bangladesh is ramping up its diplomatic efforts to ensure the safe and dignified return of Rohingya refugees to their homeland in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, according to Shafiqul Alam, the Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, Alam emphasized the importance of establishing peace and stability in Rakhine to facilitate the return of displaced Rohingyas. “We are taking all necessary diplomatic actions to ensure their safe and dignified return,” he stated.
Alam reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that the return is voluntary and dignified, with a focus on fostering peaceful coexistence between the Rohingyas and the local population in Myanmar.
Addressing a question about proposed reforms in the Election Commission (EC), Alam explained that once the government reaches a broader agreement with political parties, the EC will implement the reform measures agreed upon. He also mentioned that proposals from six reform commissions had been sent to all political parties, who are currently reviewing them.
In a related development, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka tomorrow for a four-day visit. During his trip, Guterres will join Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus for an Iftar event with approximately 100,000 Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar on Friday.
