Police have arrested five people, including the prime accused, in connection with the rape of an expatriate’s wife in Cumilla’s Muradnagar upazila and the circulation of a video of the victim on social media.

The prime suspect, Fazor Ali, 38, was arrested from Dhaka’s Sayedabad area around 5:00 am on Sunday, Cumilla Superintendent of Police Nazir Ahmed Khan said.

Four more people have been arrested for allegedly recording and circulating the video of the victim. They were identified as Anik, Suman, Ramzan, and Babu — all residents of the same village.

Earlier, a press release signed by Cumilla Superintendent of Police Nazir Ahmed Khan said Fazor Ali, a resident of Ramchandrapur Pachkitta village in Muradnagar, allegedly raped the wife of a Dubai expatriate on the night of 26 June. After the incident, Fazar Ali was caught and beaten by local people, but he managed to flee.

Shortly after the incident, some people who were present at the scene filmed the victim and circulated the video on social media platforms, prompting outrage and concern over the violation of decency and privacy.

Upon receiving the news, a team from Muradnagar Police Station rushed to the spot. Based on a written complaint filed by the victim, a case was filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

According to the case details, the woman had gone to her father’s house with her children about 15 days earlier. Around 10:00 pm on Thursday, Fazor Ali came to the house and asked her to open the door. When she refused, he broke in and raped her, the complaint added.
