Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has directed authorities to reduce waterlogging in Chattogram by at least half during the current monsoon season, with the goal of eliminating it completely over time.
He issued the directive on Wednesday while addressing a meeting at the Chattogram Circuit House focused on resolving the city’s persistent waterlogging issues.
“We’ve had enough theoretical discussions. Now it’s time for action,” said Professor Yunus. “We must gradually eliminate this problem. Though it won’t be solved entirely this year, we must see significant progress.”
The Chief Adviser acknowledged the ongoing efforts by the Chattogram City Corporation, district administration, and other local agencies, but warned that without tangible results, all efforts may seem in vain. “If we don’t see the expected impact this monsoon despite months of joint efforts, it could be very disheartening.”
He called waterlogging a “symbolic and complex challenge” for Chattogram, noting that the city must become a role model for other regions. “Chattogram’s unique capabilities must be leveraged. Many other cities don’t have the same resources, so it’s essential that local institutions stay active and civil society plays a strong role.”
He also emphasized regular follow-ups and accountability to ensure continued progress.
The meeting also addressed the development of the Oxygen-Hathazari highway and included several key advisors: Road Transport and Bridges Advisor Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan, Education Advisor C. R. Abrar, Fisheries and Livestock Advisor Farida Akhtar, Health Advisor Nurjahan Begum, Liberation War Affairs Advisor Faruk-E-Azam, Chief Advisor’s Special Envoy Lutfe Siddique, BIDA representative Chowdhury Ashiq Mahmud Bin Harun, and SDG Coordinator Lamia Morshed, among others.
