Speakers at a conference in Cox’s bazar emphasized the necessity of sustainable and dignified repatriation for the Rohingyas
They stressed that while the Rohingya people should return to their country, ongoing humanitarian assistance must be provided to support them.
The event was organized by the Commonwealth Journalists Association (CJA) with the support of the RRRC and BRAC at the conference hall of the Office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) in Cox’s Bazar.
Speakers at the conference emphasized that the Rohingya crisis has evolved into a global issue, encompassing humanitarian concerns, justice, and global accountability.
Currently, over 1.3 million Rohingyas reside in 33 camps in Ukhia-Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, where they have been for eight years, posing a significant burden on the local population.
The speakers stressed that the dignified repatriation of Rohingyas is not only Bangladesh’s responsibility but also that of the international community.
The conference, chaired by CGA Bangladesh Chapter President Farida Parveen Chowdhury, was attended by government officials including Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief Mostafizur Rahman as the chief guest.
Commissioner for Refugee Relief and Repatriation Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, Head of the Rohingya Cell of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Kamruzzaman, Central Organizing Secretary of BNP Shama Obaid, and others were also present.
Bureau Chief of US news agency Associated Press (AP) Julhas Alam gave a special presentation on the Rohingya crisis.
Professor Dr. Rahman Nasir Uddin, Dr. Zakia Sultana, Professor Dr. Amena Mohsin, Secretary of CGA Bangladesh Chapter Asif Munir, Cox’s Bazar District BNP President Shahjahan Chowdhury, Cox’s Bazar District Jamaat Islam Amir Nur Ahmed Anwari, NCP Joint Member Secretary Shuja Uddin Shuja, and CPB leader Karim Ullah Kalim discussed long-term solutions to the Rohingya crisis, as well as future plans and challenges.
The speakers highlighted the need for collective international efforts to resolve the Rohingya crisis. They stressed the importance of protecting the safety, human rights, and dignity of the Rohingya to ensure their successful rehabilitation.
