Senior BNP leaders visited the graves of two former Hefazat-e-Islam leaders, Maulana Ahmad Shafi and Maulana Junaid Babunagari, in Hathazari, Chattogram.
On Friday (August 1), BNP Standing Committee members Nazrul Islam Khan and Salahuddin Ahmed went to Darul Uloom Muinul Islam Madrasha to pray at their graves.
They were joined by several local BNP leaders, including Barrister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin, Noor Mohammad, Sarwar Alamgir, Helal Uddin, Kazi Saiful Islam, and Azim Ullah Bahar.
After visiting the graves, the BNP team met the madrasha’s director, Mufti Khalil Ahmed Qasemi, and senior teacher Sheikh Ahmed. They also joined Jummah prayers and had lunch at the madrasa.
Later, they went to Babunagar in Fatikchhari and met the current Hefazat chief, Maulana Shah Muhibbullah Babunagari.
Talking to reporters, Nazrul Islam Khan said, “We don’t see any big problems with holding the election in February. If the government wants a fair vote, the Election Commission must be allowed to work freely. We hope the government will make their position clear soon.”
He added, “Since there are no big issues now, there’s no reason to worry. We are hopeful about the situation.”
Salahuddin Ahmed said BNP is working to implement the July National Charter. “But we still have disagreements on 51 points. Talks are going on,” he said.
The BNP leaders said the visit was made on instructions from party chief Khaleda Zia and acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
