Chattogram Port has set a new record in container handling in the 2024–25 fiscal year, overcoming many obstacles throughout the year.
Even with major disruptions, such as the July Mass Uprising, week-long internet shutdown, severe flooding in Feni, two Eid holidays, natural disasters, transport strikes, customs slowdowns, and a complete shutdown by the NBR—the port managed to reach a historic milestone.
According to the Chattogram Port Authority, container, cargo, and vessel handling all increased compared to the previous fiscal year. With 15 days remaining before the end of the fiscal year, the port had already surpassed last year’s total container handling.
In 2024–25, the port handled 3,296,067 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), which is 127,377 TEUs more than the previous year’s 3,168,690 TEUs, an increase of 4.02%.
During the same period, the port also handled 130.72 million metric tons of cargo and welcomed 4,077 ships.
Looking back, the port handled 3,007,375 TEUs in 2022–23 and 3,255,358 TEUs in 2021–22. The 2021–22 total was the previous highest in the port’s history.
Md Omar Faruk, Port Secretary, said this year’s record was made possible due to the government’s direct guidance, continuous support from the Ministry of Shipping, and the hard work of port officials and staff. He also credited improvements in automation, the introduction of e-gate passes, and upgrades to container operating systems as key contributors.
He thanked all stakeholders, importers, exporters, customs officials, shipping agents, berth operators, freight forwarders, and trade organizations like FBCCI, BGMEA, and BKMEA—for their strong cooperation and commitment to fast delivery and effective communication with the port.
Faruk also acknowledged the support from the Ministry of Shipping, NBR, Ministry of Commerce, and Customs in achieving this success.
