The Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS) has officially been renamed as the National Stadium, Dhaka, as confirmed by a circular from the National Sports Council (NSC) on Saturday. The circular, signed by NSC Secretary Aminul Islam, announced the change.
Originally built in 1954 as Dhaka Stadium in Paltan, the venue has hosted numerous significant international sporting events over the years. The stadium, which is owned and maintained by the NSC, was renamed Bangabandhu National Stadium during the Awami League government’s tenure between 1996 and 2001.
This recent renaming is part of a broader trend of rebranding various sports facilities, many of which are being named after their respective cities or districts.
