Crowds continue to gather at demolished house

People, some alone and others with families, have gathered to witness the half-demolished house that once belonged to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

On Friday morning, February 7, crowds were still seen milling around the wreckage, much like the past two days. Some visitors roamed through the broken structure, while others captured photos and videos as keepsakes of the historic site.

At the same time, scrap dealers and low-income individuals were seen cutting metal rods from the debris. Armed with hammers, shovels, and cutting blades, they were collecting pieces of iron from the ruins. Among those scavenging the site were men, women, and even young people.

This destruction followed the events of February 5, when a group of students and angry citizens gathered for a “March to Dhanmondi 32” in response to a speech by former autocrat Sheikh Hasina. The demonstrators arrived in the evening and, after chanting slogans, they began vandalizing the house. The protestors eventually set fire to the building before bringing in cranes and excavators to demolish it by 11 PM. The demolition continued the following day until around 10:30 AM.
